This course covers the many rules and regulations associated with USAID funding, and is designed to enhance the ability of NGO staff to effectively manage their programs and maintain donor compliance. Whether you are new to USAID funding or have years of program experience, this highly participatory course gives you the skills and knowledge you need to confidently apply the complex directives found within the regulations. You will also have the opportunity to ask specific questions you may have about your own award. Taught by an experienced team of senior practitioners, this workshop has been completed by thousands of development practitioners around the world. Attendees consistently evaluate the learning they receive in this course as “excellent,” “effective,” and “fun.” While the focus of this workshop is USAID funding for grants and cooperative agreements, it also provides a good foundation for understanding funding from other US Government agencies.

Note: This training is the first of three requirements for our Certificate in Assistance Management. Participants completed the course will earn 23.4 CPE credits and receive a certificate of attendance. The course level is Basic. The delivery method of this program is Group Live and the Field of Study is Specialized Knowledge.

A 3-week field course in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka or Nepal) for humanitarian professionals

COURSE CONTENT. This course focuses on the entire vulnerability and risk assessment process, from using different methods to analyse risk to evaluating their results. The concept of vulnerability is vital in this context, as it allows us to understand why some individuals or systems are more at risk than others, thus widening our scope of possibilities for risk reduction. IFRC’s Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) tool is applied for a case study during the field trip. The course provides a solid basis for disaster risk reduction planning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES. After completing this course, you will be able to perform vulnerability and capacity assessments of both chronic vulnerabilities and those related to extreme events and hazards. The course will enhance your skills in disaster risk reduction planning along with decision analysis and planning for uncertainty.

The Master of Disaster Management provides you with solid interdisciplinary knowledge and skills that meet the needs of modern emergency management and disaster response. About the Course

The course blends key aspects of theory and practice of humanitarian work and approaches. The course involves case studies and simulation and provides a sound understanding of disasters, conflicts, humanitarian principles along with programme actions; all of which are critical to effective humanitarian action and risk reduction work. This 5-day Training on Essentials of Humanitarian Practice course is conducted globally by members of RedR International.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the global trends in the occurrence and geographical distribution of disasters and their impact along with major actors, their mandates and their significance.
  • Understand various international legal instruments that led to the formulation of the code of conduct and accountability frameworks.
  • Describe the existing coordination system/mechanisms among the humanitarian actors. Explain the essentials and key functionality of needs assessment in emergencies.
  • Understanding the integration of Cross-cutting themes into needs assessment and analysis, and all subsequent stages of the project cycle.
  • Describe in detail the significance of the integrated (multi-sectoral approach) programme and the phased approach in designing a humanitarian/emergency response.
  • Explain the present security scenario in humanitarian situations also personal level preparedness

  • Introduction to the disaster response context and humanitarianism, including its basic codes and standards.
  • Examining individual motivation for joining a humanitarian response.
  • Individual Preparedness for Disaster Response and Coordination – Working with multiple actors and communicating with different actors.
  • Creating and Operating Teams in Emergencies as well as Personal and Team Security in Emergencies and focusing on impact and dilemmas of relief work.
  • Need Assessment for Multi-Sectoral Disaster Response Programmatic Approaches during Emergency Response and Risk Reduction phase.
  • Project Planning and Management in Disasters and Risk Reduction, Monitoring and Evaluation in Disasters,
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management for Disaster Response and Managing Relief Distribution.
  • Personal well-being and the realities, perspectives of relief workers upon return from missions.

Throughout this training, the emphasis is on active learning through participatory group exercises, case studies and scenarios, demonstrations, and focused discussions. About the Course

This course introduces the Humanitarian Standards supporting Quality and Accountability in humanitarian programmes. It also enhances the skills and understanding of the participants on the application of Humanitarian Standards in Practice. The current changes in the humanitarian context are bringing in new stakeholders and the course will orient on how the quality and accountability frameworks provide a mechanism for partnerships and collaborative action using a common and agreed language. This course is designed to enhance the participant's understanding and application of the emergent trends and frameworks defining humanitarian action.

Throughout this training, the emphasis will be on active learning through participatory group exercises, case studies demonstrations, best practices and a table top scenario-based exercise.

About the Course

This 6-day training course prepares humanitarian personnel to address WASH needs during emergencies and recovery operations. This participatory course, with group exercises, theory-based sessions and practical exercises covers emergency water supply, emergency sanitation and basics of hygiene promotion in emergencies along with an introduction to disease prevention. This course also provides an overview of managing WASH projects in emergencies, identifying key issues and technical skills required for WASH responses.

Course Objectives

  • Explain Water and Sanitation issues and their effects on public and environmental health.
  • Demonstrate how to design and manage WASH Programmes including the application of the Sphere Standards.
  • Demonstrate how to operate and maintain Water and Sanitation Facilities Identify solutions and approaches to provisioning water and sanitation in post-disaster settings including water testing, treatment, source development and supply in emergencies.
  • Identify appropriate short and medium-term options for sanitation and excreta disposal in a range of environments.
  • Explain how to do targeting and addressing key high-risk practices to reduce morbidity and mortality in emergencies and post-emergency settlements.
  • Explain various community-led interventions for WASH along with hygiene promotion tools, methods and approaches.

Course Content - Summary

  • Water source identification, Site selection and planning; Water supply and distribution (‘pipes and fittings’); Water quality and treatment; Water storage options (tanks and construction); Water pumping and distribution; and Planning and equipment selection.
  • Excreta disposal and toilets; Environmental sanitation (solid and liquid waste management, WASH in Health facilities, site clean-up, vector control); and Faecal Sludge management.
  • Project planning, monitoring and evaluation; WASH Sector role and capability in disaster response; Transition issues (from emergency to rehabilitation); and Coordination and Partnerships.
  • Covers concepts of public health engineering and environmental health in emergencies, standard equipment used in the field. Practical sessions and demonstrations give you the chance to see and try water, sanitation and hygiene equipment, processes and practices.
  • Interlinkage of WASH with other sectors, particularly Shelter, Protection, Health and Nutrition.

Course Methodology

This training is a blend of technical classroom session and extensive practice and demonstration sessions. The course involves multiple group exercises, discussions and a simulation exercise. Every day of the training allows for reflection, evaluation and review. Informal exchange of experiences and learning are a vital part of all RedR India training courses.
