About the Course

The basic task of a logistics and supply management system is to deliver the appropriate supplies, in good condition, in the quantities required, and at the places and time, they are needed. Disasters and conflicts, depending on its nature and severity often cause disruption of supplies and transportation services which could impede the provision of essential relief materials to the affected communities. This 5-day essential course is conducted globally by members of RedR International. The course blends key aspects of humanitarian work and its theories with case studies and practical simulations leading to an understanding of disasters, conflicts and humanitarian principle along with action; all of which are critical to an effective humanitarian action and risk reduction work.

Course Aim

This course aims at imparting learning on principles of humanitarian practice and the nature of work in emergency response. The intention is to prepare professionals interested in working on the needs of affected men, women and children in crises.
Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the humanitarian relief system, its nature of organizations and role of actors in the international relief system.
  • Describe the characteristics of natural disasters and complex emergencies.
  • Elucidate various humanitarian principles, code of conduct and accountability frameworks while explaining their application to humanitarian practice.
  • Identify key cultural, political, organizational and environmental issues relating to relief assistance and the architecture of humanitarian work.
  • State and explain the importance of cross cutting issues in humanitarian work.
  • Demonstrate techniques and approaches that increase individual’s as well as the team’s responsibility in humanitarian work.
  • List down key aspects of individual preparedness for humanitarian work.

Course Outline

Day 1 The Humanitarian Context

The participants will be introduced to the disaster response context and humanitarianism, including its basic codes and standards. The course will deliver a logical framework to the disaster management cycle.

Day 2The Humanitarian Professional

The second day will start with examining participants’ motivation for entering into humanitarian response. The course will then discuss individual Preparedness for Disaster Response and Coordination – Working with multiple actors and communicating with different actors. The training will also cover the aspects of Creating and Operating Teams in Emergencies as well as Personal and Team Security in Emergencies. The day will conclude with a session focusing on impact and dilemmas of relief work, including the Do No Harm principle.

Day 3 Putting it into Practice

On the third day, the participants will learn about Needs Assessment Process for Multi- Sectoral Nature of Disaster Response, followed by sessions on aspects of Emergency response and Risk Reduction showing Programmatic Approaches for Disaster related Work. This will include Project Planning and Management in Disasters and Risk Reduction, Monitoring and Evaluation in Disasters, Logistics and Supply Chain Management for Disaster Response and Managing Relief Distribution.

Day 4 Reflecting on Practice

The entire day will be spent working on presenting and debriefing an operation planning based simulation in a Disaster situation.

Day 5 The Realities

On the last day, there will be an open discussion on various cross cutting issues in relation to emergency response. Sessions will also include sharing of first-hand experiences of ‘what it is like to work in the field’. The day will conclude with sharing of ideas regarding psychological health and the realities and perspectives of a returned relief worker.

Who Should Attend?

This intensive course involving essential theory and class room exercises will be ideal for people interested in working in humanitarian and disaster risk reduction. Those with specific technical skills will benefit from learning the ways to apply their expertise to unique humanitarian contexts. Individuals and agency staff working in the sector would also benefit from vital orientation and reflection on current humanitarian work issues, trends and knowledge.

Course Aim:

In the context of the international or national laws, what is the status of a humanitarian relief worker and the need for all actors to understand the implications?
  • Threats, risks and vulnerabilities assessment including actor mapping.
  • Possible security strategies for risk management.
  • Management Approach to Security: Elements of Security Management Framework and threshold of acceptance.
  • Specific threat/safety management Aspects: Security awareness, security assessment, travel security and safety, crowd and mobs, site security, cash security, kidnapping and hostage taking, action under fire, first aid and resuscitation, handling anger/harassment and general tips on survival in insecure environments.
  • Gender & Sexual Violence: The impact of team composition on negotiation and security. Issues of sexual violence, vulnerability, strategies for protection and operating procedures.
  • Culture & Environmental Aspects: Recognize the impact of cultural knowledge and the risks. Identifying how personal behavior impacts on risk.
  • Information management and incidence reporting.
  • Staff Management: To include personal, team and organizational dimensions, aggression, stress and conflict management.
  • Practical Training: These would comprise of first aid, communication procedures and training on the use of equipment, map reading, survival skills.

General Information:

Training shall be conducted in English but as a RedR India policy, participants who are not very comfortable with English are also encouraged to participate and are helped in every possible way.

Guru Arjan Dev Institute of Development Studies, Amritsar is organizing two days 8th IDSAsr National Seminar on the theme Education for Sustainable Development: Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Challenges on November 24-25,2017. Seminar aimed to reorient education towards sustainability, which in turn had the potential to impact the way people think. For this reason it was important to look at ways in which one could effectively monitor progress and capture learning in the process of implementation. All interested are requested to submit their papers before October 2017 end. The Seminar will be held in the conference hall of Guru Nanak Auditorium, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The seminar will help to equip people with knowledge of and skills in sustainable development, making them more competent and confident while at the same time increasing their opportunities for leading healthy and productive lifestyles in harmony with nature and with concern for social values, gender equity and cultural diversity.

Added feature of the seminar is that to create awareness about valuable concept of sustainable development among the up growing generation, paper writing and presentation contest has been also planned . Students not exceeding 18 yrs of age and enrolled in any of the school/college of Punjab and Chandigarh can participate in the contest. Head of the school will forward all the papers of his/her school along with token fee as a single demand draft in favour of The Director, G A D Institute of Development Studies payable at Amritsar. Best 15 paper writers will be invited to present their papers at the seminar in the last week of November 2017. Two Best papers will be selected from the 15 paper writers and presented at the seminar. Non presentation of the selected papers will amount to disqualification and have no claim to the award/participation. Certificate of participation will be awarded to all the participants. No award can be awarded depending upon the quality of the paper if the juries decide. There will be a Special Award for government school student’s paper writers. Best paper will be selected from the Five government school paper writers invited to present their papers at the seminar. Decision of the jury will be final and cannot be challenged. This 5-day essential course is conducted globally by members of RedR International. The course blends key aspects of humanitarian work and its theories with case studies and practical simulations leading to an understanding of disasters, conflicts and humanitarian principle along with action; all of which are critical to an effective humanitarian action and risk reduction work.

Course Aim

This course aims at imparting learning on principles of humanitarian practice and the nature of work in emergency response. The intention is to prepare professionals interested in working on the needs of affected men, women and children in crises.
Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the humanitarian relief system, its nature of organizations and role of actors in the international relief system.
  • Describe the characteristics of natural disasters and complex emergencies.
  • Elucidate various humanitarian principles, code of conduct and accountability frameworks while explaining their application to humanitarian practice.

Day 1 The Humanitarian Context

The participants will be introduced to the disaster response context and humanitarianism, including its basic codes and standards. The course will deliver a logical framework to the disaster management cycle.

Day 2The Humanitarian Professional

The second day will start with examining participants’ motivation for entering into humanitarian response. The course will then discuss individual Preparedness for Disaster Response and Coordination – Working with multiple actors and communicating with different actors. The training will also cover the aspects of Creating and Operating Teams in Emergencies as well as Personal and Team Security in Emergencies. The day will conclude with a session focusing on impact and dilemmas of relief work, including the Do No Harm principle.

Day 3 Putting it into Practice

On the third day, the participants will learn about Needs Assessment Process for Multi- Sectoral Nature of Disaster Response, followed by sessions on aspects of Emergency response and Risk Reduction showing Programmatic Approaches for Disaster related Work. This will include Project Planning and Management in Disasters and Risk Reduction, Monitoring and Evaluation in Disasters, Logistics and Supply Chain Management for Disaster Response and Managing Relief Distribution.

Day 4 Reflecting on Practice

The entire day will be spent working on presenting and debriefing an operation planning based simulation in a Disaster situation.

Day 5 The Realities

On the last day, there will be an open discussion on various cross cutting issues in relation to emergency response. Sessions will also include sharing of first-hand experiences of ‘what it is like to work in the field’. The day will conclude with sharing of ideas regarding psychological health and the realities and perspectives of a returned relief worker.
